Roman numerals are a numeral system from ancient Rome that uses combinations of seven letters — I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1,000) — to represent numbers. Symbols are generally added together, but when a smaller symbol appears before a larger one it is subtracted, which is how IV means 4 and IX means 9.
Standard Roman numerals only reach 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). To write larger values, Romans used the vinculum: an overline drawn above a symbol to multiply it by 1,000. With this notation V̅ is 5,000 and M̅ is 1,000,000, extending the system up to 3,999,999. This converter renders the overline as real text so you can copy and paste it anywhere.
