Data storage is measured in two closely related but different ways. Decimal (SI) units — kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte — are defined as powers of 1000, which is how drive manufacturers label disk capacity. Binary (IEC) units — kibibyte (KiB), mebibyte (MiB), gibibyte (GiB) — are powers of 1024 and reflect how memory is actually addressed.
This is why a “1 TB” drive shows up as roughly 931 GiB in your operating system: it is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes, which equals about 931 gibibytes. Use the toggle above to switch systems.
